The first night we arrived in Siwa we were taken to a hot spring where some of the men of Siwa gathered to play and share their expression of Siwan music and dance. It was such an honour to sit with them and to hear each instrument individually and how each person's rhythm and beat came together to create a musical sound of the oasis.
At the beginning you could tell we were all a little nervous being together, we went around the circle and said our names and where we come from. That slowly began to melt the barrier of cultural differences and created a sense of safety for all of us to show up as we are.
As they played I could feel the strings in my body being played to, it stirred an old feeling of when we all used to come together to celebrate and dance. I could feel my African soul picking up the drums. My feet moved and my body began to snake and pick up different melodies with the music. As we co-created the moment the energy began to rise and you could feel the mystery and the sacredness of the sounds of siwa.
